Stories Of Centex Success!
“It has been nearly a year since you installed our Carrier® Infinity Heat Pump and Air Purifier system and fine-tuned our air distribution system. We deeply appreciate the care and personal attention Centex Air & Heat gave to the installation and follow-up. We would be pleased to recommend your company to anyone seeking energy efficient a/c equipment installed in a highly professional manner at a reasonable cost. You may recall that our air handler system is located in the attic of our single-story home and the new Carrier® Infinity system with air purifier needed to be placed in a more accessible location from the existing system. Centex Air & Heat’s professional expertise was obvious in the way they designed and placed the new foundation, routed the air ducts (with minimal change) and ensured that the system was stable and quiet. Thank you. The variable air handler of the Infinity System really does the job in the most quiet and efficient manner and probably contributes significantly to the reduced electric bills since installation. Even in the recent extreme cold (for Texas) we were cozy with even temperatures throughout the house.”

Central Texas HVAC FAQs
When ice forms on your AC unit in Central Texas, it's usually due to restricted airflow, low refrigerant, or a dirty air filter. In our humid climate, warm air passing over frozen components creates ice buildup. This common issue can damage your system and reduce cooling efficiency. Check and replace your air filter first, and ensure all vents are open and unblocked. If ice persists after these steps, call a professional as you may have a refrigerant leak requiring immediate attention.
In Central Texas, AC filters generally need changing more frequently than national recommendations due to our unique conditions. For basic 1-inch filters, replace every 30-45 days during peak seasons (March-October) and every 60 days in winter. However, several factors affect this timeline: pets in the home (change every 30 days), nearby construction (every 20-30 days), or allergies (every 20-30 days). High-quality pleated filters might last 60-90 days, while washable filters need monthly cleaning. Check your filter monthly - if it looks dark or dirty, change it regardless of timing.
During winter in Central Texas, your heat pump might blow air that feels cool for several normal reasons. First, heat pumps deliver air at around 90-95°F, which feels cool compared to your body temperature (98.6°F), but is still warming your home. Second, your unit might be in defrost mode, temporarily switching to cooling to melt ice off the outdoor unit. However, if the air is truly cold, you might have issues with your reversing valve, refrigerant levels, or failing compressor. Quick test: if the air temperature is below 85°F, call a professional for inspection.
Only use emergency heat in Texas when outdoor temperatures drop below 35 degrees, when your outdoor heat pump unit is malfunctioning, or during severe ice storms that have compromised the outdoor unit. Emergency heat relies solely on electric resistance heating elements, which is much more expensive than normal heat pump operation. Many Texans mistakenly switch to emergency heat during any cold weather, leading to sky-high electric bills. Instead, let your heat pump's automatic auxiliary heat handle typical cold snaps—it kicks in automatically when needed. Only switch to emergency heat if your outdoor unit is damaged or completely iced over. Return to normal operation as soon as temperatures rise or repairs are completed.
